Digital Badges

Recognition is one of the biggest motivators for people.  Being singled out for excellence among your peers is incredibly motivating.  For many years, badges, pins, medals, plaques and other pieces of paper have been given to people to recognize their achievements.

However, it is hard to share this recognition with others in a virtual way.   Especially on your website, Facebook, Twitter, Linked In or other social networks

Thanks to the Mozilla Foundation, we have a better better way:  Digital Badges!

As an instructor, team, coach, grade level, after school instructor, etc. you decide on what it takes for a student to earn a badge.  Maybe they aced five quizzes in a row, learned to write 100 Chinese characters, participated in seven after school activities or became a member of the student council. You name it!   The ideas are endless.

At first I thought the concept of digital badging was rather simple. Militaries have been issuing badges for thousands of years, how much different can digital badges be? Um, well they are different. Not so much in why we award them, but the process of awarding and accepting them has changed

So now you have your badge idea and you want to create your own badge to use in your classroom. At Concordia we have it easy as David Lyon has graciously volunteered to make badges for everybody. However, you might want to make them on your own as well. If you have a digital art background, then this will be an easy project for you. If not, then you might want to consider using one of the badge design resources available on the web.

4. Issuing Badges

4. Issuing Badges issuebadge-150x150.jpg

Your badge is ready to go, but you still need to issue the badge to the recipient such as one of your students. Doing this is fairly simple at Concordia as we have set up a process for you to get this done.

he magic of digital badges is the ability to put the badge in a digital backpack that lives out in the cloud (Internet). This almost magical solution is done by the Mozilla Foundation with their OpenBadges program. They have created a space where badge recipients can store their badges and then enable them to be displayed on their personal social networks or websites.
